History:
Rin is the son of Satan, born from a human mother. Due to his younger twin brother Yukio's weaker constitution, all of Satan's powers were inherited by Rin alone. Rin and Yukio were taken in by Father Fujimoto, an exorcist, and raised as his sons. From a young age, Rin had incredible strength and powers which caused him to be feared and shunned by others. In combination with his quick temper, these attributes often got him into fights.
For the first fifteen years of his life, Rin knew nothing of his true lineage. So when one day his demonic powers were awakened during a fight, he was completely stunned. Knowing that this awakening would endanger Rin, Father Fujimoto tried to give Rin a hurried explanation while preparing him to make a quick get-away to safety. He gave Rin the sword that was used to seal his demonic powers and a cell phone to contact someone who could help him. Overwhelmed by this new information and the feeling of being pushed away, Rin became frustrated and fought with Father Fujimoto, telling him to stop acting like his father.
Unfortunately, this emotional outburst hurt Father Fujimoto, who truly felt a parental bond with Rin, to the point that his heart was weakened enough for Satan to possess his body. Satan, seizing the opportunity to control a being that has the powers of a demon, but is able to exist in the human world without needing to possess another entity, tried to drag Rin back through to Gehenna (the demon realm) by creating a Gehenna Gate. Just when things seemed the most hopeless, Father Fujimoto was able to regain control of his body long enough to take his own life and rob Satan of the vessel he needed to exist in the human realm. Filled with desperation, Rin unsheathed his sword, unsealing his demonic powers and permanently changing his appearance. This allowed him enough power to destroy the Gehenna Gate and prevent his fall into Gehenna.
At Father Fujimoto's funeral, Rin called the contact he had been given along with the sword. This contact, Mephisto Pheles, revealed himself to already be present, along with an escort of several masked exorcists. He told Rin that, because his powers had been fully awakened by the unsheathing of the sword, he must be destroyed for the protection of the human realm. Rather than choosing to accept this death sentence or fight back, Rin asked to be allowed to become an exorcist in order to defeat Satan. Amused by his tenacity, Mephisto accepted Rin's proposition and allowed him to enter True Cross Academy as an exorcist-in-training.
Here, Rin discovered that his brother, who had entered True Cross Academy on a scholarship, is not only the representative for the freshman class, but has been an exorcist for two years and will be his teacher for demon pharmacology. The two got into an argument during Rin's first lesson and Yukio revealed that, not only has he always known what Rin is, he blames Rin for Father Fujimoto's death. Yukio raised his gun against Rin and asked him to die, but Rin refused to fight his brother and eventually convinced Yukio that his resolve to become an exorcist was unshakable.
From this point, Rin began his exorcist studies and made several new friends and gained the companionship of Father Fujimoto's familiar, Kuro. As he progressed, he had several encounters with opponents who attacked him with mysterious motivations. It is clear that they were after him because of his relation to Satan, but the exact reason for their actions remained unclear. Throughout this, Rin was forced do his best to avoid using his flames and alerting the Vatican to his existence. After learning more about the types of exorcists and the ranks they can achieve, Rin decided to work toward becoming a Knight (an exorcist specializing in using swords) and attaining the highest rank within the True Cross Order: that of Paladin.
Later, Rin was attacked by Amaimon, another of Satan's sons. Amaimon took Rin's sword and used it to force Rin to take his demonic form. This attracted the attention of Shura, a Vatican spy sent to assess suspicions of betrayal from Mephisto. Shura stepped in to stop Amaimon and took Rin off to confront him alone about his origins. While her original intent was to destroy Rin as a potential threat, his conviction and ridiculously far-fetched goals made her decide to give him a chance to prove his worth.
During a summer training session for Rin and his classmates, Amaimon attacked once more, this time targeting Rin's friends. Rather than continue to watch his friends suffer on his behalf, Rin chose to use his sword and expose his true form to his friends. While he was able to protect them from Amaimon, this act alienated him from the rest of the group and brought his existence to the attention of the Vatican.
Rin was brought forth as evidence of Mephisto's betrayal, but Mephisto turned the trial around, claiming that he left Rin alive to be trained as a weapon against Satan. Rin was permitted three months to pass the exorcist exam and show his potential value as a weapon. After the trial, Rin begged Shura to train him to use his sword and she grudgingly agreed.
Shortly after returning to his training, Rin became caught up in a plot in which the left and right eyes of the Impure King (ancient relics guarded by different branches of the True Cross Order) were being targeted by traitors to the Order. While the Order could not prevent the theft of the left eye, an attempt on the right eye at the Kyoto Branch Office was successfully deflected. Because of this attack, Rin's class was sent to Kyoto to lend aid to the Branch Office. Three of Rin's classmates are from important families within the branch office, a fact which further complicated the trip.
In Kyoto, things remained tense between Rin and his friends, although he was able to smooth things over with a few of them. He also worked on improving his control, but as soon as he made headway, the right eye was stolen. After the theft of the right eye, Rin witnessed the falling out of his classmate Bon and his father. Reminded of his own parting words to Father Fujimoto, Rin was determined that the two should not part until they had made up. He did everything he could to get his point across, beginning by yelling, then punching Bon square in the face, and finally unleashing his flames in anger. Even after being almost completely incapacitated by Shura, Rin refused to give up. He was only stopped when Shura caused him to lose consciousness. With the help of Shura, the Kyoto exorcists locked Rin away.
Rin was awakened in his cell by a visit from Shura and Yukio who came with a letter sent to Rin by Bon's father. This letter revealed details about the Myou Dha Sect (the group that eventually joined the True Cross Order as the Kyoto Branch) and about a past encounter between Bon's father and Father Fujimoto as well as the nature of the threat they were currently facing. Shura gave Rin his sword to encourage him to join the fight against the Impure King, but his complete loss of confidence made him afraid of his power and made it impossible for him to unsheathe his sword. Shortly after, Mephisto appeared and announced that, due to his actions, it had been decided that Rin should be executed. He summoned a special door to keep Rin trapped securely in his cell for the time being and left Shura with supplies to help in the upcoming battle to stop the revival of the Impure King.
Trapped within the strange prison, Rin berated himself for his lack of control. It took the reassurance of Shiemi, who had come to get him out, to make him accept himself again. Once free of Mephisto's containment, Rin joined his friends and escaped to find a way to help in the fight against the Impure King. They stumbled upon Bon's father who was in bad shape from attempting to prevent the revival. Bon took over the contract with his father's familiar, Karura, in order to set up a barrier around it in his stead. Rin accompanied Bon to protect him while he set up and held the barrier, leaving Shiemi and Izumo to help Bon's father.
On their way, Kuro found them and decided to help by carrying them to a safe spot where Bon could set up the barrier. Rin defended Bon while he chanted the sutra and held the Impure King within the barrier he formed, but eventually the heart of the Impure King appeared and the situation became dire. With the help of Bon's trust, Rin was able to unsheathe his sword. Ucchusma, the natural enemy of the Impure King appeared to show Rin how to use his flames to burn the entire mountain and destroy the Impure King. Remembering the trust of his friends, Rin found a way to have his flames burn only the Impure King and leave everyone else unharmed and purified of the contamination.
Rin's actions help earn him the trust of the Kyoto branch exorcists and finish repairing his relationship with his friends.
AU History: N/A
Personality:
Rin has a very carefree demeanor that generally obscures his more serious outlook. Rin is quick to anger, quick to smile, and quick to offer his support. He can be blunt to the point of being rude and shows no hesitation when it comes to saying what he thinks. Although Rin can be very impulsive and hot-tempered, he does keep in mind the consequences of his actions and rarely jumps into things without thinking. (Instead he jumps into things after deciding they are worth any risk of consequences which, to an outside observer, looks nearly the same). Because of this, although he can be stubborn and proud, he will not do things that will put him at risk just to prove a point. Rin has decided that becoming a Paladin and defeating Satan are things he absolutely must accomplish and so he must survive long enough to see those goals out.
Rin has set high goals for himself in life but, although he fully intends to reach them someday, he can be lazy. He hates studying and has a hard time focusing on his schoolwork which leads to abysmal grades. Rin shows no embarrassment when asking his classmates when there is something he doesn't know about and is always very straightforward about his knowledge (or lack thereof). Despite the fact that his scholarly performance is lacking, he seems to retain the information he learns and can apply it in practical situations. He expends more effort in his physical training because he finds it more engaging and enjoyable and he likes to tag along with his brother on missions.
Because Rin spent the first part of his life feared and misunderstood by most people, he has never had any close friends until recently. Attending True Cross Academy has changed that and he has begun to understand how to make friends he can trust and rely on. Rin has come to appreciate the benefits of having good relationships with other people and he greatly values all of his friends. Despite (or perhaps because of) his value of friends, he tends to try and act alone in dangerous situations. He places special importance on his relationship with his brother and is truly proud of how far his brother has gone in life. He thinks so highly of his brother that he has set him up as a kind of gauge for his goals; the closer he comes to surpassing his brother, the closer he is to achieving his goals.
Rin also has a very strong tendency to get involved when he thinks someone is making a mistake, especially if it is one he has personally suffered the consequences of in the past. In order to get his point across, he will lecture, yell, throw punches, or (more than likely) some combination of these. He will do whatever he can to prevent people from hurting themselves. He shows this propensity toward getting in peoples' business on several occasions, but never quite to the extent that he does when Bon quarrels with his father.
One of Rin's most serious weaknesses is his lack of confidence. While he can be full of false bravado at times, he truly suffers from self-confidence issues. The times that he has lost control of himself when using his flames have caused him to doubt himself and become afraid of his own powers. After all, what's the use in getting stronger if you can't keep from hurting the people you care about? And he has lost control in the presence of his friends and others multiple times. This gets so bad that, for a short period of time, he is unable to unsheathe his sword and unleash his flames. Shiemi's encouragement that she knows he would never hurt any of them with his flames is what finally gets him to leave behind his self pity. And it is Bon's unwavering trust and friendship that allows him to make the final push to be able to unsheathe his sword and use his flames once again. Finally, the knowledge that he has so many important friends to protect is what helps him control his flames when he defeats the Impure King. This goes a long way toward restoring his confidence, though he still shows some hesitation when interacting with his friends after everything is over.
Abilities:
Rin, being the half-human son of Satan, has quite a few abilities that give him an edge against a regular person. He has superhuman strength, allowing him to effortlessly lift heavy loads. Along these lines, his other athletic capabilities (such as jumping, climbing, stamina, etc) are also enhanced. He is a self-trained fighter as well as a self-trained swordsman. While this leaves him somewhat lacking in technique and finesse, he tends to make up for it through a combination of determination and a berserker-like mindset.
Rin also has impressive healing capabilities. He is able to recover from wounds quickly after receiving them (in fact, in one instance his leg is almost completely severed at his calf and later that evening he is back to walking as if nothing happened) and nothing can keep him down for long. He is not without limit however; expending great amounts of power drains him greatly and some demon-exorcising techniques have a reasonably strong effect on him.
A little used power in canon is his "demon telepathy." This allows him to hear the thoughts of demons. Most notably, it allows him to communicate with his familiar, a cat-like demon named Kuro.
One of his key powers that sets him apart from humans, and even most other demons, is the blue flames he can produce from his body. These are a sign of carrying Satan's blood. The power of these flames and the degree to which Rin is able to control them varies greatly depending on his state of mind. They can cause great destruction when he is fighting or when they get out of control, but they can also be used in a way that burns only what he intends while leaving surrounding objects and people unscathed.
Rin also has a full demon form in which his powers are greatly enhanced. In this form he has great difficulty maintaining control and can easily lose himself to his flames. He is learning to exert greater control when using his flames, and has recently made significant progress.
The use of his flames are tied to his sword. Unsheathing the blade brings out his full demon form, but he is able to use his flames to a lesser extent even without the sword.

Rin looked around the opulently decorated room in curiosity as the old woman babbled about something or other. He had no idea how he had ended up in this strange place. He had gone all over Kyoto with the others, but he couldn't remember seeing anything like this place. He wished he knew where everyone else was. If they were here, he could ask them what was going on and let them worry about it.
"...and if you're going to stay here, you'll have to work. Sign this." A paper and a quill floated up to him and he stared at them for a moment before comprehension set in.
Rin crossed his arms and glared sullenly at the old hag. He'd tell her what she could do if she wanted him to sign some lousy contract. He was a bad-ass exorcist after all! Not some kind of cheap labor lackey. He wasn't afraid of a stupid old witch.
"Well?!"
Rin jumped at the shrill voice and swallowed nervously, his eyes wide. Well, he wouldn't tell anyone he was afraid, anyway. And it was only a little. He frowned. She had surprised him, after all.
"Either sign and get to work or don't and I'll turn you into a pig and you can feed the others" she said, waving him away dismissively. "I don't have time to coddle an obstinate child like you."
Rin bristled. "Listen up, old hag! I don't..." He was interrupted when the woman looked up from the papers on her desk with a look that could have sent a horde of demons tripping over each other in fear as they fled. He choked on his words, grabbed the quill supplied, and scribbled his name without another thought.
The witch grabbed the contract with an accepting grunt and...
Rin squinted. She had done something with her hand and the characters peeled off the page save for one radical.
"Well, Yuu. What are you waiting for? Get to the kitchens and get to work!"
He looked up at her in confusion. What had she been saying? A look at her face told him she was running out of patience, so he quickly nodded his head and hurried from the room. At least she had given him a job he enjoyed. There wasn't much Yuu liked more than cooking.
